{"id":828,"date":"2012-04-02T19:26:40","date_gmt":"2012-04-02T23:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/?p=828"},"modified":"2016-01-29T07:09:51","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T12:09:51","slug":"828","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/828\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s that time again&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s spring break here, and for me that means that my children and my husband are both home for an entire week.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a really good thing for my garden, but first, unfinished business!\u00a0 Last summer we received from a Freecycler, a porch swing.\u00a0 The fabric was the worse for wear, but the frame was in good shape.\u00a0 After trying a few different techniques for putting a seat on the thing,\u00a0 I think I have finally found a solution that works.\u00a0 (My first try, which is the same used to attach the back, you can see in later pictures.\u00a0 It popped the second time we sat on it.) This one, made with jute webbing sewn on with hemp thread, feels really solid, and comfy, if not pretty.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184853.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184853.jpg?resize=645%2C864&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20120402-184853.jpg\" width=\"645\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Woven Jute webbing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184905.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184905.jpg?resize=645%2C864&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20120402-184905.jpg\" width=\"645\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big picture: with the back, painted by my daughter and myself.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With that done, I could move on to other garden projects.\u00a0 Some good friends of ours let us come to their house and cut some bamboo for garden trellises.\u00a0 (I tried to grow tomatoes last year with only our chain-link fence as a trellis.\u00a0 My neighbor was very patient, and even tied up a few loose creepers.)\u00a0 This year I am better prepared!\u00a0 Lots of tomato plants again, and this year, hopefully a few beans as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184922.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184922.jpg?resize=645%2C864&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20120402-184922.jpg\" width=\"645\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see the new apple tree in the foreground.\u00a0 Sadly, the almond didn&#8217;t make it.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude41\u00a0\u00a0 And in the background is the bat-house that we put up this fall.\u00a0 No tenants yet, but I am hoping that we will have some by the end of the summer to help keep the insect population down.<\/p>\n<p>And here you can see the garden path that I have started.\u00a0 We cant afford the pavers yet, but I had trouble mowing the grass path last year, so this year, I&#8217;ve just gone ahead and put down the barrier cloth that our neighbor handed down to us as extra off of his roll.\u00a0 (Isn&#8217;t it nice to have good neighbors.\u00a0 They are close to our parents&#8217; age and have been very kind and as I mentioned before, patient)\u00a0 You can see where I&#8217;ve started putting down sand down by the gate.\u00a0 It&#8217;s going to take a lot of trips to the hardware store, but I plan on adding 2-3 bags each time I go this summer.\u00a0 Maybe by the end of the summer it will be finished.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184952.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-184952.jpg?resize=645%2C864&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20120402-184952.jpg\" width=\"645\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see that the onions are growing well.\u00a0 These I planted in the fall, and they should be ready to harvest soon, and on the other side of the path&#8230; Strawberries!\u00a0 I hope the squirrels don&#8217;t get them all.\u00a0 The pets aren&#8217;t as spry as they once were, but hopefully they will be enough of a deterrent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185108.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185108.jpg?resize=645%2C864&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"20120402-185108.jpg\" width=\"645\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My garden is the size it is, because my husband insisted that I leave some of the yard for the children to play in (Really?\u00a0 Yards are for kids?\u00a0 Who knew?)\u00a0 After two years in the house, and seeing how much of the yard our kids actually use, (the sandbox on the porch and a minimal amount for other purposes) he decided that he would like part of the yard left &#8220;wild.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;m not entirely sure what that means to him, but I try to accommodate him when he makes these kind of decisions, so at about the point in the lawn where I am done with mowing anyway, I cut a curvy kind of line and have just been letting it grow.\u00a0 Today the kids and I cast about some shade tolerant wildflower seeds.\u00a0 I think it&#8217;s going to look nice, and now I don&#8217;t have to mow the back third of the lawn!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185129.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-827\" title=\"20120402-185129.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185129.jpg?resize=764%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185129.jpg?resize=764%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 764w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185129.jpg?resize=224%2C300&amp;ssl=1 224w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402-185129.jpg?w=1936&amp;ssl=1 1936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And finally, since my husband was taking some of the bamboo, our friends said &#8220;Why not take it all?
