{"id":42,"date":"2010-09-15T20:22:18","date_gmt":"2010-09-16T00:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/exhaliastudios.com\/blog\/?p=42"},"modified":"2012-03-03T20:50:12","modified_gmt":"2012-03-03T20:50:12","slug":"onions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/onions\/","title":{"rendered":"Onions!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several months ago I bought a sample card from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paradisefibers.net\/Louet-Sales-Spinning-Fibers-Wool-Sample-Card-p\/704.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Paradise Fibers<\/a> with a whole bunch of different wool and silk fibers.\u00a0 I wondered, after Kaleeb&#8217;s and my experiments with natural dyes (in which the commercial wool took up the dyes much more intensely than my hand-spun), whether the breed of sheep made a large difference in the color of the finished yarn.\u00a0 So, I spun up a whole bunch of samples and today I got around to dying them with onion skin.\u00a0 Here are the results:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/oniondye.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-43 alignleft\" title=\"oniondye\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/oniondye.jpg?w=1000\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The undyed fibers are next to the dyed ones for color reference.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The upshot:\u00a0 While there were minor differences between the sheep breeds, white wool pretty much all dyed to the same color.\u00a0 Darker wools were correspondingly darker.\u00a0 Mohair took up the dye with greater intensity, as did silk.<\/p>\n<p>For those so interested the procedure was:<\/p>\n<p>1. Boil 31 g of onion skins for 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>2.
