{"id":1385,"date":"2015-01-14T22:35:19","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T03:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/?p=1385"},"modified":"2015-05-04T11:17:40","modified_gmt":"2015-05-04T15:17:40","slug":"spider-man-yarn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/spider-man-yarn\/","title":{"rendered":"Spider-Man Yarn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1388\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-1.jpg?resize=840%2C502&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"spiderman yarn 1\" width=\"840\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-1.jpg?w=840&amp;ssl=1 840w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-1.jpg?resize=300%2C179&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am going to give up on apologizing for long lapses in posts.\u00a0 This time, my excuse is very good&#8230; Just a career change and move slowing me down.\u00a0 But never fear, I still find time for crafting.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, during Christmas break, I took the kids into downtown Greensboro to visit a local yarn shop.\u00a0 Gate City Yarns had a nice selection of fibers, but don&#8217;t get me started on the parking.\u00a0 My daughter expressed a desire to learn to spin, so I purchased some brightly colored wool to learn on.\u00a0 My son is too young to learn to spin, but I had be fair didn&#8217;t I?\u00a0 So I let my son pick out some colors for me to spin up into a yarn for him.\u00a0 He chose red and blue.<\/p>\n<p>Recently I&#8217;ve had a chance to do some reading.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had this book: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Spinners-Book-Yarn-Designs\/dp\/1603427384\">The Spinner&#8217;s Book of Yarn Designs by Sarah Anderson<\/a>, for quite a while.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/91rPfrkGW6L.jpg?resize=331%2C338\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t say enough good things about this book.\u00a0 Apparently, based on the Amazon reviews, I&#8217;m not the only one who feels this way.\u00a0 This is not a book for a beginning spinner.\u00a0 While she does go over basic techniques, there are better books for beginners. Her documentation of different advanced techniques is wonderful, and the pictures are very helpful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So those two things, the red and blue wool, and the unusual spinning recipes in Sarah Anderson&#8217;s book came together, and I decided to try spinning a bubble crepe yarn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-close.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1386\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-close.jpg?resize=840%2C872&#038;ssl=1\" \/><\/a>Here you can see my control tests.\u00a0 These are spun so that you can refer back to them as you spin to make sure that your gauge and twist remain constant.\u00a0 As you can see I only did so good a job on the bulky red.\u00a0 Spinning a fat single is much harder than spinning a thin.\u00a0 The upper part of the singles have been plied back on themselves to make it easier to see the angle of the twist.\u00a0 So the construction goes as follows.\u00a0 An S spun skinny blue single with about a 30 degree twist.\u00a0 The bulky red is also spun S with about the same amount of twist.\u00a0 These two are plied together in the Z direction but are over-spun with excessive twist (About 60 degrees).\u00a0 Another skinny blue single is spun in the Z direction.\u00a0 The plied yarn is then plied again with the blue single.\u00a0 The varying diameters of the threads give you the bubble effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/exhaliastudios.com\/squirrel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/spiderman-yarn-3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" over-all effect reminded me of Spider-Man&#8217;s suit.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a neat effect, but I have no idea what I&#8217;m going to do with it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the trouble I have with most novelty yarns: I can&#8217;t seem to find a project that shows off the beauty of the yarn itself.\u00a0 If anyone has any suggestions, I&#8217;d love to hear them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jetpack-slideshow-noscript
